Characters from the trailer for THE CIRCLE, ranked by the likelihood that they’re secretly robots.

When we at OnwardRobots.com saw the trailer for THE CIRCLE, we thought it looked like a tense, taut techno-thriller. We marveled at the eery similarities to our current world. We kind of wanted a new tablet. See for yourself:

We too, like you undoubtedly did, thought some of the characters might secretly be robots disguised as humans. At least, two, right? (Note: We think this about every movie, most TV shows, and several cave paintings.) So, like regular Deckards, we combed through the trailer, collected the clues, and compiled the evidence below. You decide for yourself: WHICH CHARACTER IN THE CIRCLE IS MOST LIKELY A ROBOT DISGUISED A HUMAN, based on the trailer, ranked from least- to most-likely a robot.

See a special pre-release screening of The Circle at The Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor, Michigan on Wednesday, April 26. All ticket proceeds support 826michigan and its free writing and tutoring programs for school-aged students in Detroit, Ann Arbor, and Ypsilanti. Tickets and more information available here. Buy one and find out once and for all who is and who isn’t a robot. It's the only way to be sure.

Emma Watson

Emma Watson The Circle

PROBABLY NOT SECRETLY A ROBOT.

Seems to have parents. (Though, those may just be robots disguised as parents.) Most convincingly, she did not seem to like her soul-crushing job. Robots love soul-crushing jobs.

The Boy From Boyhood

Ellar Coltrane The Boy from Boyhood The Circle

PROBABLY NOT SECRETLY A ROBOT.

We’ve seen him age. If he’s a robot, he’s the thirteenth in a series of upgrades. An army of boyhood-bots! He very well may be several robots, but more likely is probably just a human.

John Boyega

John Boyega The Circle Star Wars

PROBABLY NOT SECRETLY A ROBOT.

We don't need to see John Boyega's identification. He's not the secret robot we're looking for. He can go about his business. Move along.

Patton Oswalt

Patton Oswalt Clapping The Circle

MIGHT BE SECRETLY A ROBOT.

Suspicious clapping technique enters uncanny valley.

Karen Gillan

Karen Gillan The Circle

PROBABLY SECRETLY A ROBOT.

Two major points in favor of Gillan's likely secret robotic nature. First, a preponderance of science fiction credits on her IMBD page. Second, her conspicuously low-profile in the trailer screams third-act robotic reveal!

Tom Hanks

Tom Hanks The Circle mug

PROBABLY SECRETLY A ROBOT.

Hank’s renowned universal appeal a little suspicious for a nominal "human." Smart half-zip a little too smart, you know. Like, perhaps it's artificially smart. Working theory: Was a human, but wished on a Zoltar machine to become a robot-disguised-as-a-human.

This Drone

A Drone The Circle #OnwardRobots

CONCLUSIVELY A ROBOT.

Is a drone.
